About Qasr and how this works
What is Qasr — shortening salah while travelling?
Qasr (Arabic: قصر) is the Islamic ruling on shortening prayer while travelling. The rules of shortening prayer state that four-rak'ah prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, Isha) are shortened to two rak'ahs. Fajr (2 rak'ahs) and Maghrib (3 rak'ahs) are not shortened. When can you shorten prayer? When your journey meets the distance and stay requirements of your madhhab.
Qur'anic basis
"And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer..." — Qur'an 4:101
Prophetic practice
"It is an act of charity which Allah has done to you, so accept His charity." — Sahih Muslim 686a
What is Muqeem?
Muqeem (Arabic: مقيم) means "resident." If a traveller intends to stay at a location for a period equal to or exceeding the madhhab's threshold, they are considered muqeem and must pray their salah in full. When they depart again, qasr resumes only if the new journey independently meets the distance requirement.
